The Mara needs two nights.
The Narok road out of Nairobi takes five hours, the flight takes fifty minutes, and either way the first afternoon is mostly gone before you clear the gate. Give the reserve two nights and you get the dawn drive, a full day inside the reserve, and the evening hour that turns everything copper. Give it one and you get a long drive.
How many days can you give it?
Kenya rewards the extra night, but a good trip fits whatever you have. Three shapes, from one morning outside Nairobi to a circuit across the parks, and each one links straight through to what it costs.

The day run
9 - 10 hours · from $34 · 251 reviews
Out of Nairobi at first light, through the escarpment to Hell’s Gate or the Naivasha shore by mid-morning, back past Westlands before the evening jam. It is the shape most people take on a layover or a spare Sunday, and it asks a small share of what one night in a camp costs.

Two nights in camp
The three-day Mara
from $540 · 486 reviews
The group joining safari that carries most of Kenya: Land Cruiser west at dawn on day one, two full days of drives, back Sunday evening. Sharing the vehicle keeps the price honest, and day two opens with a sunrise drive that carries the whole trip.

Mara plus the lakes
The four-day circuit
from $1,961 · 132 reviews
Add Lake Nakuru or Naivasha to the route and that long drive stops being dead time. Flamingo shallows, rhino country, then the reserve itself. Four days is where a first Kenya trip stops feeling like a highlights reel.

Everything happens before the heat.
Camps wake at half past five. The plain is grey, the air is genuinely cold at that altitude, and the predators are still moving before the heat pushes them under a bush until late afternoon. Every guide tells you the same thing, and every guide is right: the drive you resent at half five is the one that justifies the alarm.
Giraffes before lunch.
Nairobi keeps its wildlife close in. The elephant nursery in the forest opens for one hour a day and closes again. The feeding platform out in Karen puts you at giraffe head height with the Ngong Hills behind. The park gate is a twenty-minute drive from the CBD.
The park you are allowed to cycle.
Hell’s Gate holds no big cats worth the name, so the rangers let you ride a bicycle straight through it. Zebra and warthog off the track, the descent into the gorge afterwards, and Lake Naivasha’s hippo channels twenty minutes away by boat.

South of Mombasa the reef takes over.
Fort Jesus and the carved-door streets behind it stack four centuries of Swahili, Portuguese and Omani coast into about six blocks. An hour further south the coast becomes white sand at Diani, and the dhows run for Kisite on the morning snorkel while the channel is glass. Plenty of Kenya trips end here, and they are right to.
Choose the gate you drive through.
Kenya divides into six or seven destinations, and any one of them can carry a whole trip. The Mara for the plains game, Amboseli for the herds and the mountain behind them, Nakuru and Naivasha for a short run west, Tsavo for anyone starting from the coast.
Twelve shapes a Kenya trip takes.
A week under canvas and a morning walking Mombasa’s Old Town both sit in here, priced, with what other visitors made of them attached.
No overnight bag required.
Nairobi sits against the fence line of a national park, sixty minutes from the escarpment and about four hours from Amboseli on a clear run. All of them start after breakfast and finish before the evening traffic closes Mombasa Road.
Three days, west and back.
Nobody sees Kenya in three days, but the order still helps: the city’s own park while you are finding your feet, then the road west for the reserve, then a day given entirely to the herds before anything else gets added.
Day 1
The park inside the city
Gates open at six. Lion, buffalo and rhino with the office towers on the skyline behind them, the elephant nursery for its one open hour at eleven, the giraffe platform after lunch. The jet lag works in your favour for exactly one morning.

Day 2
The road west
Out through Narok, down the escarpment, into the reserve by early afternoon in time for the first drive. Take the evening one as well. After five the light on the plain does the rest.

Day 3
A day given to the herds
Dawn drive, back to camp to eat, out again when the afternoon cools. Between July and October the herds are crossing in the north of the reserve, and that is where this day goes.
